Nu credeam să-nvăţ a muri vreodată;

Jalnic ard de viu chinuit ca Nessus,

Ori ca Hercul înveninat de haina-i;

Focul meu a-l stinge nu pot cu toate

De-al meu propriu vis mistuit mă vaiet,

Pe-al meu propriu rug, mă topesc în flăcări…

Pot să mai re-nviu luminos din el ca

Hardly had I thought I should learn to perish;

Ever young, enwrapped in my robe I wandered,

Raising dreamy eyes to the star styled often

Solitude's symbol.

All at once, however, you crossed my pathway -

Suffering - you, painfully sweet, yet torture...

To the less I drank the delight of dying -

Pitiless torment.

Sadly racked, I'm burning alive like Nessus,

Or like Hercules by his garment poisoned;

Nor can I extinguish my flames with every

Billow of oceans.

By my own ilussion consumed I'm wailing

On my own grim pyre in flames I'm melting...

Can I hope to rise again like the Phoenix

Bird from the ashes?

May all tempting eyes vanish from my pathway

Come back to my breast, you indifferent sorrow!

So that I may quietly die, restore me

To my own being!

„Daţi-mi statul cel mai absolutist, în care oamenii să fie sănătoşi şi avuţi - îl prefer statului celui mai liber, în care oamenii vor fi mizeri şi bolnavi" (Timpul, 23 dec. 1877).

„regimul parlamentar s-a viciat la noi din zi în zi mai mult, încît miniştrii au ajuns astăzi în poziţia de-a putea guverna după placul lor, fără control de jos, fără control de sus" (Timpul, 22 febr. 1880).
„Chiar dacă epoca formelor goale, care domneşte..., s-ar putea explica, deşi nu justifica, prin cuvîntul «epoca de tranziţiune», e evident că sarcinile cu care tranziţiunea ne-a încărcat cu asupra de măsură ne dictează de a ne întoarce de pe calea greşită, de a privi în mod mai limpede starea adevărată a ţării, de-a judeca în mod mai limpede necesităţile ei" (Timpul, 17 febr. 1880).

„Chestiunea de căpetenie pentru istoria şi continuitatea de desvoltare a acestei ţări este ca elementul românesc să rămîie cel determinant, ca el să dea tiparul acestei forme de stat, ca limba lui, înclinările lui oneste şi generoase, bunul lui simţ, c-un cuvînt geniul lui să rămîie şi pentru viitor norma de desvoltare a ţării şi să pătrundă pururea această desvoltare. Voim statul naţional, nu statul cosmopolit, nu America dunăreană" (Timpul, 17 dec. 1881).

„Noi credem că e mai mult ori mai puţin indiferent dacă oamenii care supun desvoltarea lor proprie desvoltării naţionale a României sunt, în orice caz, de origină pură traco-romană sau dacă, într-un număr de cazuri, această origine nu este atît de proprie" (Timpul, 17 dec. 1881).

During winter solstice, when the sun is weak and frost and dryness take over, Romanian peasants conceived ceremonies to help the Sun and Nature to overcome this "temporary crisis."

Romania is a country with a long and complicated history.

It also has a variety of customs, traditions and holidays.
Within South Eastern Europe however, Romania preserved a significant number of traditional customs and celebrations manifest within the strong community of the village.

Peasants possessed a deep knowledge of the way to tend the earth. They had the ability to enjoy life and to dream into the future. They were regular observers of the feasts for the earth, their cattle, the flowers and crops, and the overall beauty of living.
The Romanian customs can be divided into family customs, calendar-based customs and religious customs. They represent a "triptych" marked by the three major life changes: birth, marriage and death.

Marking the start of the festive season,

Bucharest's Museum of The Romanian Peasant hosts its St Nicholas Fair.

On the night of December 5th, boots are cleaned and carefully polished to be put by the door or on the windowsill to wait for St. Nicholas' (Sfantul Nicolae) visit. He is generous , putting a little present in each boot—usually nuts, tangerines, sweets and small items, like new socks. In some areas a walnut branch or thin twigs with gold, silver, or bronze gilded walnuts are left as a warning that behavior needs to improve.

On the sixth of December, gifts are given to friends, children, and those in need.

It is one of the most important Romanian holidays.

More than 800,000 Romanians celebrate their name day on St. Nicholas day, December 6th. 815,453 persons are named Nicholas or devivations of the name, 530,089 men and 285,364 women, reports the Ministry of Administration.

Over 1000 churches are dedicated to St. Nicholas in Romania, at least 23 are in Bucharest.'

"...The Great Union of 1918 was and remains the most sublime event in Romanian history. Its greatness resides in the fact that the fulfilment of the national unity is not the work of any politician, government or party; it is the historic deed of the whole Romanian nation, accomplished out of a powerful longing coming from the vivid awareness of the unity of the people and channelled by the political leaders for it to be led towards its aim with a remarkable political intelligence. [...]

The Great Union was not the result of Romania participating in the war. Neither the supporters of the Entente, nor those of the Central Powers did take into account the Russian revolution or the disintegration of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. Their reasoning followed the traditional formula of the power relations between states: the victory of the Entente would bring to us Bucovina, Transylvania and the Banat, while the victory of the Central Powers would bring Bessarabia; one victory excluded the other so that no one could see how all these provinces could join the borders of the Old Kingdom simultaneously. [...]

It was not a military victory that laid the foundation of Great Romania, but the will of the Romanian nation to create for itself the territorial and institutional framework that is the national state. [...]

A historic necessity - the nation has to live within a national state - proved to be more powerful than any government or party, guilty of selfishness or incompetence and, putting the nation into motion, gave it that huge drive to overcome all the adversities and make its dream come true: the national state. Kavala has always been an important port on the Balkan Peninsula.

Neapolis - Christoupolis - Kavala are its historical names.

It has been inhabited since the Neolithic age.

In the 7th century BC it was a Thassian colony called Neapolis and later it joined the Athenian Alliance.

It gains great prosperity during the Macedonian rule, after Philip II has annexed it, its harbor serving Filippi.The Romans upgraded the major commercial port by having Via Egnatia run through it but at the same time it was made the target of Goth and Hun raids.

Apostle Paul comes to Neapoli to preach the Christian faith in Europe.

Byzantine times, when the town was given the name "Christoupolis" as a prosperous period; however, Normand ravages and Turkish occupation put an abrupt end to it.The important monuments of the old aqueduct, nowadays known as Kamares, dates from that period.

From one arched gate to the other, centuries put on a new face.

There's a house with no door and I'm living there

at nights it gets so cold and the days are hard to bear inside.

There's a house with no roof, so the rain creeps in,

falling through my head as I try to think out time

I don't know you, you say you know me, there's so much that I am unsure of ...

There's a house with no bell, but then nobody calls;

I sometimes find it hard to tell if any are alive at all outside...

There's a house with no sound; yes, it's quiet there, there's not much point in words if there's no-one to share in time.

I've learned my lines, I am ready to tell whoever will finally come in

There's a house with no door

and there's no living there: one day it became a wall well I didn't really care at the time.

There's a house with no light,

all the windows are sealed,

overtaxed and strained NOW NOTHING IS REVEALED BUT TIME

There's a house with no door and I'm living there

Argos, Love and The Theory of Waiting

My best friend said once:

'This is how I would envision Argos, the dog

of Odysseus. Waiting for his master by the

side of the wine dark sea.

Argos was a young dog when Odysseus left to

fight at Troy. When Odysseus returned twenty

years later, Argos could no longer walk. He

saw Odysseus, smiled (in my mind), wagged

his tail and died. Such is life.'

(In Greek mythology, Argos was Odysseus' faithful dog.

He waited for his master's return to Ithaca for over a decade while most presumed Odysseus dead.

He was the first to recognize the King returning from the Trojan War, even though Odysseus was disguised as a beggar to discover what was going on in his palace during his absence.

It was said that as soon as Argos recognized his master, he dropped his ears and did his best to wag his tail. Having fulfilled his destiny of faith by laying his eyes upon his master once more, he released a final wimper and died. )
